Luke Shaw has realised that he’s playing for his Manchester United future, claims Phil Neville

Phil Neville believes Luke Shaw has finally realised that he’s playing for his Manchester United career.

The Englishman has been given a string of opportunities in recent weeks after being out in the cold for some time. He made his first start for the club in 219 days when he returned to side against CSKA Moscow in a 1-0 UEFA Champions League victory.

Shaw started against AFC Bournemouth the week after that, and impressed greatly in both games, showing both quality and the correct attitude.

“Well if you look at the left-back Luke Shaw,” Neville said. “He’s playing for his Manchester United career.

“You look at the fact that they’ve got Ashley Young at left-back at the moment, who’s playing really well, but he’s notoriously a winger.

Luke Shaw, the penny has to drop soon. He’s got the quality, he’s got age on his side, he’s got the ability, he’s now got to perform.

“The last two games against Moscow and Bournemouth, he has shown signs that the penny has dropped,” Neville explained.

Shaw’s ability and potential are obvious. There is no doubt in most Man United fans’ mind that Shaw could be the club’s first-choice left-back for the best part of the next decade.

However, a number of things must come together for that to happen. Manager Jose Mourinho must continue giving him chances, as he has done against CSKA, Bournemouth and most recently Bristol City in a Carabao Cup defeat.

Shaw himself must show the right attitude and perform in games. The fans have to continue supporting him and he’s got to get lucky; with injuries, not making mistakes, seeing strikers convert opportunities he creates.
