Ian Wright encourages Manchester United to sign Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has encouraged Manchester United to pursue Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld next summer.

Jose Mourinho secured the services of Victor Lindelof for £31m over the summer and decided against selling Chris Smalling given that Marcos Rojo was still injured.

Alderweireld has been injured for a large part of the current campaign but has played a fundamental role in the previous two seasons under Mauricio Pochettino, making 94 appearances in all competitions in total.

And Wright, speaking on BBC Radio Five Live, has noted that he could see the Belgian at Old Trafford.

“Alderweireld could go anywhere,” he said.

“He could play for any club. He could play for Real Madrid. He could play for Barcelona. He could play for Manchester United.”

Any Premier League side would, of course, jump at the chance to sign a player of Alderweireld’s calibre but they have more pressing concerns in other areas of the pitch at this moment in time.

The impending departures of both Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini means Mourinho needs reinforcements in central midfield, alongside a traditional winger after failing to secure the services of Ivan Perisic.

Most notable, perhaps, is their dearth of current options at full-back, with little in the form of reliable quality beyond Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia.
