Leicester City 2-2 Manchester United: Player ratings

by Leo Nieboer

David de Gea 6 – Lacked presence for Jamie Vardy’s strike but couldn’t do much about the painful injury time equaliser.

Victor Lindelof 6.5 – The home side looked to target the Swede, who was making his first Manchester United appearance at right back, and he generally held his own, taking up smart positions and holding firm. Gave away the ball slightly too often.

Phil Jones 6 – Absolutely nowhere to be seen for Jamie Vardy’s goal but his composure improved as the game went on.

Chris Smalling 6 – Somehow let Riyad Mahrez get away from him in the build-up to Leicester City’s goal and, while providing a notable aerial presence, lacked composure on the ball.

Ashley Young 7 – Another commanding display from the Englishman, bursting forward at will and moving the ball up the pitch with precision.

Nemanja Matic 7 – Did a truly superb job shutting down Leicester’s midfield, handling possession with an air of cold command. Played an important role in Manchester United’s first goal.

Paul Pogba 6 – Turned over possession well in the centre but, once again, lacked any tangible presence in the final third. Too many wayward shots.

Juan Mata 7 – Liquid gold. Danced across the pitch in wonderful fashion, working the ball with artisan-like care, and produced two superb strikes, his second a pin-point free-kick past Kasper Schmeichel.

Jesse Lingard 6 – Provided an assist for Mata and looked nimble on the ball, breaking through the lines with purpose, but wasted a chance to put the game to bed, somehow missing an open goal and coming off soon after.

Anthony Martial 6 – Linked up well with his teammates and kept Danny Simpson busy, but lacked cutting edge in the final third. Missed a glorious chance in the second half.

Romeu┬áLukaku 6.5 – The Belgian should have had three assists to his name, only for sublime balls for Martial, Lingard and then Henrikh Mkhitaryan to be wasted. Failed to impose himself in the box.
