Louis van Gaal encourages Daley Blind to join Barcelona

Louis van Gaal has encouraged Daley Blind to leave Manchester United and join Barcelona amid rumours of the Catalan side expressing an interest in his services ahead of the summer.

The Dutchman, signed by Van Gaal in 2014, has fallen down the pecking order this season and received widespread criticism for his display against Bristol City.

Blind’s contract expires at the end of the campaign and Barcelona have reportedly pin-pointed the defender as a potential replacement for Javier Mascherano.

And Van Gaal, speaking earlier this week, has told Blind to depart Old Trafford at the end of the season.

Daley Blind is better off going to Barcelona, than staying with Man United,” he said. “He is not even on the bench for United sometimes. Daley can play in more than one position and at Barcelona he would never be sat in the stand.”

“I think Daley would fit in better at Barcelona anyway. His level and his style of play is more suited to Spain than England.

“He can operate as a central defender who builds up the play. He can be a defensive midfielder or an attacking left back. Daley can do it all.”

No surprises to see Van Gaal, who recently expressed his desire to exact revenge on Man United, encouraging one of his acquisitions to seek pastures new after falling out of favour under Mourinho. The man has been respectfully silent since leaving his Old Trafford post but now wants a fight with anyone who’ll listen, it seems.

But he is right when he notes that Blind would suit Barcelona better. In fact, he has always looked incongruous in the Premier League, lacking any speed or strength, and his longevity at the club can only be put down to his impressive versatility and intelligence on the ball.

But with the likes of Mascherano, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets all nearing the end to their Barcelona careers, Blind’s deftness and superb footballing brain could come in handy at the Camp Nou while Mourinho oversees a much needed overhaul at full-back next summer.
