Ander Herrera has suggested that Manchester United put in one of their best performances of the season against Derby County.
The Reds finished 2-0 winners over the Championship on Friday night thanks to a screamer from on-form Jesse Lingard and another from Romelu Lukaku, both in the final 10 minutes.
Man United had been left frustrated after striking the post with alarming regularity and seeing two fantastic efforts from Juan Mata and Paul Pogba saved brilliantly by Scott Carson in the Derby goal.
Herrera and teammates looked slick at times, though, creating chances with ease and only occasionally being let down by the final cross or the finishing.
“Until you score, it’s difficult. I think this was one of our best games of the season,” he told BBC Sport.
“Everyone was feeling part of the game, moving the ball. I think we played amazing.
“But if you don’t score, the game is always open and that’s what happened. We deserved to win by more goals.”
The Spaniard is right. Marcus Rashford hit the post twice, Mata and Pogba saw Carson save their efforts and the Reds had more than 25 shots in total. Pogba missed a gilt-edged chance after Carson had parried Lingard’s shot. An early goal and United could have trounced Derby.
Herrera says Jose Mourinho’s men can still win trophies this season, because that’s what United are about.
“We can be optimistic with the second half of the season. We are Manchester United. This club is about titles.”
