The Armenian, who arrived at Old Trafford from Dortmund in July 2016 for £27m, has continually failed to impress at No.10 this season and now finds himself miles away from Mourinho’s first choice starting XI.
He has attracted interest from Inter Milan as well as his former club, who are keen on adding reinforcements this month as they look to rectify a poor start to their Bundesliga campaign.
And according to the Independent‘s Miguel Delaney, Mkhitaryan is open to reuniting with Dortmund this month, but the current gap between the potential wages offered by the two clubs may lead to a deal being struck in the summer instead.
Mourinho clearly no longer trusts the 28-year-old following a continued string of anonymous displays at Old Trafford and will want to offload him sooner rather than later to make way for Paris Saint Germain’s Lucas Moura.
He will most likely stay at the club for the remainder of the season and could yet confound his critics, but the way his confidence has slumped over the last few months doesn’t bode well for the future.
