Herman van Holsbeeckvan: Leander Dendoncker will cost Manchester United a lot of money

by Marwan Harraz

Anderlecht chief executive Herman van Holsbeeckvan has named his price for the club’s star player and Manchester United target Leander Dendoncker.

The versatile Belgian has been on Jose Mourinho‘s radar for a while now and although talk of a transfer only seemed to be rumours, Van Holsbeeckvan’s comments suggest that perhaps United will sweep him up sooner than expected.

Dendoncker is a defensive midfielder by trade but has learnt to fill in the centre-back position pretty well for Anderlecht recently.

Capable of playing in central midfielder as well, Leander would represent a viable option for the Red Devils, providing good depth to the club’s current stars.

Should Mourinho attempt to make a move for him, at least he would know exactly how much the 22 year old would cost in today’s unpredictable market.

According to Football Talk, The Sun quoted Herman as saying: “Dendoncker is the centrepiece of our defence. If we let him leave it has to be for a lot of money.

“We also have to find a replacement for him, even if it is a loan for six months. A deal can be done if the interested club puts 25 or 30million euros (£22m-26.5m) on the table for him.”

Although the price the chief executive has asked for would previously be a relatively high number, in today’s market it’s actually a decent number for a youngster with potential.

Manchester United’s lack of midfield depth has been a problem this season and was sorely exposed when they faced fierce rivals Liverpool at Anfield.

The Red Devils were missing Paul Pogba and Jose Mourinho opted for a more defensive line-up due to the lack of options in the engine room.

Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera, Nemanja Matic and Marouane Fellaini are the club’s current options with Scott McTominay also on the wings.

However, some of the above players have been missing at various stages this season due to injuries whilst others have underperformed, leaving Mourinho no option.
