Gary Neville says Alexis Sanchez will improve Manchester United immediately if he joins the Reds in the coming days.
The Chilean forward looks set to sign for Man United imminently after Manchester City reportedly pulled out of the race.
Halfway through United’s win against Stoke City on Monday night, a number of reliable sources began reporting that City had walked away from the deal while others have suggested his move to United is just days away from being completed.
Neville commented on the rumours, describing him as a guaranteed 25-goal-a-season player.
“Two weeks ago if you’d told me Sanchez could end up at United, I’d say ‘how?’, but we must remember United are a serious club that wins trophies even in the last four years,” Neville said on Sky Sports.
“They’ve matched City in that period even though City have been on the up & United down.
“Everyone talks about going to play for Pep, they don’t mention him playing for City. He’s not a permanent fixture – he won’t be there for five years. Manchester United are still a huge attraction and if they’re offering lots of money then they have a chance.”
United have stolen the lead in the chase for Sanchez due to their willingness to pay Arsenal’s £35m asking price in addition to Sanchez’s high demands of up to £10m in agent fees.
However, Neville has been highly critical of journalists and ex-players claiming that Sanchez would only ever join United, the biggest club in world football and England’s most successful ever football club, for the money.
A former-captain of United, Neville explained just how big an impact Sanchez would have on the side.
“He would improve them straight away,” Neville said. “Ultimately he’s 25 goals a season, he’ll hit the ground running because he knows the Premier League and he’s a bit of a certainty.”
Some have suggested £35m + huge wages for a 29-year-old is excessive for a player whose contract is running out in the summer, but Neville says it gives United guaranteed quality that’s not available elsewhere.
“United at the moment to be fair need short-term success, they need to win a league.
“Rashford and Martial at this moment are still developing, Lukaku has hit a bit of a thing but he will score 20-25 goals. With Sanchez in there you’ve got another 25 goals, that’s big.”
