Jamie Redknapp: Alexis Sanchez shouldn’t leave to Manchester United

Jamie Redknapp has claimed that Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez shouldn’t be in a position where he has to leave to Manchester United.

The Chilean has been heavily linked with the Red Devils recently as it appears as though his transfer to Old Trafford is imminent.

Fans are still doubtful of the legitimacy of the reports particularly as fierce rivals Manchester City are also reportedly interested in him.

Sanchez’s contract runs out in the summer but both Manchester clubs are unwilling to wait until then and have attempted to beat their competitors to the punch by signing him now.

Redknapp though believes that Arsenal should never be selling to either club, effectively strengthening a Premier League rival.

According to the Sunday Express, Jamie said: “I find it hard, even though a player’s going to be leaving, why he [Sanchez] still can’t play for his club. They’ve got themselves in this position; the manager, the board, whoever.

“They have to accept this responsibility and it can’t happen again because these players should be tied down to long-term contracts, they shouldn’t be going to enhance United or City.

“They should be playing for Arsenal, it’s one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Alexis isn’t the only Gunners’ player whose contract runs out in the summer with attacking midfielder Mesut Ozil also in the same situation.

Manchester United were said to be interested in the German too but those rumours have quieted down since the possibility of signing the winger became more likely.

Ozil is reportedly interested in rejoining his former manager Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford but it seems as though the Portuguese sees Alexis Sanchez as a more urgent signing.

Mourinho is said to be frustrated with Henrikh Mkhitaryan and it could be that Mesut is the Armenian’s direct replacement should he ever be sold.

United’s need for a winger though clearly prioritises over the former Real Madrid man who perhaps could be negotiated into remaining patient until the summer.
