Jose Mourinho explains why Manchester United’s Paul Pogba is performing so well lately

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho explained to fans after the club’s 3-0 win over Stoke just why star man Paul Pogba has been performing so well lately.

The French international arrived from Juventus last season with high expectations placed on his shoulders after being made the world’s most expensive footballer.

In his first campaign at Old Trafford he was impressive but didn’t seem to reach the heights of his days with the Italian giants.

Fans were willing to give him a season’s worth of adaptation and it appears as thought their faith has been repaid by Pogba, particularly in recent games.

Mourinho believes Paul’s improvement is simply due to a change in system and in the player’s own mentality but saved room to laud his key man.

According to Football365, Jose said to MUTV: “He was moving the ball fantastically well, long passes, changing of direction, creating problems to the opponent in relation to their (midfield) block.

“Assists. If he scores the free-kick with the last shot of the game it would be really a reward for him.

“I think he’s happy, he’s happy the way the team is playing – very adapted to him. He’s happy because the team is changing the profile and the profile is going more in his direction.”

United started the season in Jose Mourinho‘s preferred formation of a 4-2-3-1 but it seemed to diminish Paul Pogba‘s impact on the side.

Playing in a double pivot alongside the ever impressive Nemanja Matic, the academy product was limited, almost forced into paying attention to his defensive duties.

The formation also relied on the front four to perform, giving them plenty of freedom whilst fully knowing that their two sitting midfielders covered for them.

Although Pogba was performing better than last season it was still clear that he could do better and a switch to the 4-3-3 formation recently has seen him reach new heights with the Red Devils.

Unshackled, the powerful midfielder brings more flair and creativity to his team- attributes that were previously lacking and suddenly Mourinho’s men look an entirely different prospect already.
