Juan Mata could leave Manchester United for free next summer – report

Manchester United may lose Juan Mata for free over the summer after delaying their decision to activate a one-year extension on his contract, according to reports.

The Spaniard has continued to have a positive impact under Jose Mourinho this season, claiming three goals and three assists in 18 appearances.

His four and a half year contract, signed back in January 2014, expires at the end of the current campaign.

And according to ESPN‘s Rob Dawson, Man United are at risk of losing Mata for free over the summer after failing to activate an extension on his contract before January.

The delay in tying down Mata for another year means he can freely speak with other clubs about a potential move elsewhere for the remainder of the season. Several reports have suggested that United are keen to extend his current deal but failure to do so ahead of 2018 could mean they lose one of their most reliable players.

But perhaps there is a reason behind United’s stasis. Jose Mourinho has demanded of the board a ‘magician’ forward to add creativity to his ranks over the summer and, even with Alexis Sanchez added in January, will feel like greater investment is needed once the season ends, forcing Mata to make way as a result.
