Former footballer and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has been busy discussing the likely impact Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez will have on Manchester United.
The Red Devils are expected to announce the Chilean’s arrival at Old Trafford at any moment but there have been some concerns over the possibility of Chelsea stealing the deal.
Sanchez was originally Manchester City’s top target since the summer but United’s interest in the current window meant that his head was turned.
The Sky Blues have since claimed that they’re pulling out of the deal due to the finances involved but fans are already happy with Alexis for seemingly choosing their club over their rivals.
Merson has also explained the quality of the Premier League winger and what type of influence he’ll have on the table wherever he ends up.
According to the Daily Star, Paul said to Sky Sports: “The million dollar question is where Alexis Sanchez goes. If he goes to Chelsea they finish in the top four, no doubt.
“Manchester United are second for me based on them being favourites to sign Sanchez, which would make them a shoo-in.”
Alexis Sanchez’s transfer to Old Trafford would perhaps be the Premier League signing of the season and will surely reinforce the club’s challenge to reach the top of English football once more.
While rivals Arsenal will certainly try to replace him, there’s no doubt that the deal strengthens Manchester United and weakens the Gunners.
Perhaps most importantly is that Jose Mourinho has been crying out for a player like Sanchez and perhaps even he couldn’t predict a player of that quality would become available.
A winger has been the target for United since last summer and having almost secured one of the world’s best, it definitely represents a bargain for the club.
