Emmanuel Adebayor explains why he prefers Jose Mourinho over Arsene Wenger

by Leo Nieboer

Former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor has noted that he preferred Jose Mourinho as a manager over Arsene Wenger, labelling the latter as “fake”.

The Togo forward spent four campaigns with the Gunners, scoring 62 goals in all competitions, and left for Manchester City in 2009 under turbulent conditions.

He enjoyed a brief spell working with Jose Mourinho on loan at Real Madrid, winning the Copa del Rey in the process.

And Adebayor, now playing for Istanbul Basaksehir, told Beyond The Game that he trusted Mourinho more than any other manager.

“Mourinho is the one of the managers I loved and will always love,” he said.

“He is one of the [most] honest managers I have met in my career, which is crazy because most of the managers are all kind of fake.

“As an example, I had a meeting with Arsene Wenger in his office when he told me I had to leave because he didn’t see my future anymore in Arsenal.

“So I didn’t have any other choice than joining Man City, who I was very happy to join.

“And the next day when I joined Manchester City I saw him doing a press conference in London saying that I wanted to leave because the money was big and everything and since that day that is where the hate for Arsenal came from.”

Mourinho will wage war against absolutely anything and anyone who threatens his circle. The man sees dark, twisted conspiracies against him and his team wherever he goes and it lays the platform for the unique siege mentality he establishes at every club.

And with this comes an almost primal disposition to protect his players, to work them harder than they’ve ever worked, to tell them exactly where they are going right and wrong.

He may be depicted as a Machiavellian sort of figure in the public eye, but behind the scenes there aren’t many better individuals to play under.
