Jose Mourinho explains why Manchester United need Premier League star Alexis Sanchez

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has explained just why the club need Premier League star Alexis Sanchez amongst their ranks.

The Chilean has been heavily linked with the Red Devils all transfer window long with fans often questioning just where he’ll fit into the current squad.

Supporters are undoubtedly excited about the transfer but some sections were puzzled as to how Mourinho would fit all their current stars into the same line-up.

United have always boasted a host of options and have had competition for spots since Sir Alex Ferguson‘s days as manager of the club.

The former Chelsea boss though has discussed just why bringing Sanchez to the club is so important, citing the need for competition.

According to 101 Great Goals, Jose said to Standard Sport: “In this moment there is no competition for places. We have four attacking players for three positions, three are starting, one is on the bench.

“You look to the attacking areas and we need that extra competitive internal competition but more solutions for us so let’s see.”

The Red Devils currently alternate between a 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 formation but fans expect Jose Mourinho to eventually settle on his preferred tactic which is the former.

Should that be the case then the Portuguese manager is correct in his claim that there’s a lack of competition in the attacking positions.

Manchester United had Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, Romelu Lukaku, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata for their front four attack.

Mourinho is known to prefer two players per position and so that leaves United with one player short given there’s seven for four positions.

The addition of Sanchez makes sense on paper but the transfer of Mkhitaryan to the Gunners doesn’t since it means the number of attackers remain the same.

Quality wise the Red Devils have certainly gained an upgrade but fans shouldn’t be surprised to see Jose dip into the transfer market for a winger once more in the summer transfer window.
