Alan Shearer has hailed Manchester United’s signing of Alexis Sanchez as a ‘great move’ for both club and player.
The 29-year-old signed a four-and-a-half year contract at the club in the biggest deal of the January transfer window that saw attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan join Arsenal.
It was a rare straight player-swap deal and Shearer claimed that Sanchez will provide Man United and manager Jose Mourinho exactly what they are missing.
“This has been a great move for United and for Sanchez,” Shearer said.
“What’s happened this season and the relative league positions has not yet seen them [Manchester City] usurp United as one of, if not the, biggest clubs in the world. Sanchez will give Jose what his team is lacking at the moment.”
Many had claimed that Man City were overtaking United as the bigger club given the 12-point gap over the Reds they have established at the top of the Premier League.
However, the signing of Sanchez, who was expected to go to City either this month or in January, is evidence that that is not the case.
Shearer said Sanchez will provide United with the killer blow against teams which they have failed to finish off.
“Defensively they are excellent,” the former Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers striker said.
“With Matic and Pogba they have a great midfield too. There is no doubt there is talent in attack but they do not finish teams off and that is not just down to missing chances in front of goal, it is down to not creating enough.”
United’s team is vastly improved by the arrival of Sanchez. He’s a world-class player, as his now former-manager Arsene Wenger admitted when bidding farewell to the Chilean. And United have signed him for free.
