Arsenal enquire over Manchester United defender Chris Smalling: report

by Marwan Harraz

Arsenal have reportedly been sniffing around Manchester United for another one of their players and it’s said that they’re eyeing up a move for Chris Smalling.

The London club have been involved with the Red Devils over the signing of the window in Alexis Sanchez but they didn’t let go of their star player without stealing Henrikh Mkhitaryan in return.

The news has been made official but it appears as though Arsene Wenger’s business isn’t complete as he bids to strengthen his squad to ensure Champions League football next season.

Smalling has featured for United fairly frequently this season, particularly after Eric Bailly‘s recent injury freed up a spot in the starting XI.

Lining up alongside fellow England international Phil Jones, it seems as though he’s done enough to earn interest from Wenger.

According to Arsenal Fever, The Gambling Times reports that the Gunners have enquired over the possibility of signing Chris after Jonny Evans has leaned towards a move to Manchester City.

Manchester United can part with Chris Smalling without too much concern given their defensive cover should be more than up for the task.

Jose Mourinho‘s squad boast the centre-back as well as Jones, Bailly, Marcos Rojo, Victor Lindelof and young academy product Axel Tuanzebe.

The Red Devils typically play with a four man back line meaning there’s actually too much competition in the centre of defence for Mourinho.

However, the Portuguese is perhaps worried about their injury proneness and the lack of tactical flexibility should United lose Smalling.
