Manchester United pin-point Alex Sandro as primary left-back target next summer – report

by Leo Nieboer

Manchester United have cooled their interest in signing a left-back in recent weeks but have identified Juventus’ Alex Sandro as their primary option ahead of the summer, according to reports.

Reports towards the end of last year claimed that Mourinho, with Luke Shaw failing to breach the starting XI, had identified Sandro as a target ahead of the January transfer window.

But Shaw’s recent resurgence through December has allowed the club to explore other avenues in the market, with Mourinho even noting ahead of the 1-0 win over Burnley that there weren’t many left-backs in the game better than the Englishman.

However, according to M.E.N‘s Samuel Luckhurst, Mourinho has nonetheless identified Sandro as his number one option at left-back over the summer.

Shaw’s recent form should not by any means deter Man United from splashing out on further reinforcements at full-back. With Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind set to leave at the end of the season, Mourinho’s only other left-back option is 32-year-old Ashley Young, while Antonio Valencia, now 33, serves as the only reliable right-back at the club.

There remains a huge dearth in quality in that position at United. Shaw’s recent form, which could be punctuated by injury at any time, doesn’t change that notion.
