Ryan Giggs: Manchester United can win the Premier League next season

by Leo Nieboer

Ryan Giggs has insisted that Manchester United have what it takes to challenge for the title next season.

Jose Mourinho‘s men begun this season neck and neck with Manchester City at the top of the table, only for Pep Guardiola’s men to pull away.

Their victory at Old Trafford in December, which preceded a slump in form, has all but ensured that Man City will be crowned champions in May.

But Giggs, speaking earlier this week, noted that Man United have the attacking resources to mount an improved challenge next term.

“They’ve got pace, guile, goals, experience and make up a really top forward line,” he said.

“I would say the forward line is as good as Manchester City’s, but the difference is the way of playing, with Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva behind consistently finding the front three for City.

“United have Paul Pogba who could potentially be as good as them, but then Nemanja Matic is more defensive, so it is just that creative area where City have got the upper hand.”

I have quite written this exact title countless times since 2014, and with each season that passes I feel more and more reluctant to do so.

But with proper investment in the summer United will be in their best position for a title challenge in the post-Ferguson era. Mourinho has slowly engendered a winning nous in this side, taken the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcos Rojo, Jesse Lingard to the next level, and shored up the defence in typical fashion.

He was handed a new contract last month, which indicates the board is pleased with where the team is going under his tutelage, and that needs to be reflected in the summer.
