Jose Mourinho insists Alexis Sanchez can help Manchester United win the Champions League

Jose Mourinho has noted that the addition of Alexis Sanchez will bolster Manchester United’s hopes of winning the Champions League this season.

The Chile international arrived over the January transfer window in a straight swap deal with Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

He has made an ebullient start, claiming a goal and two assists, but supporters will expect to see him make a difference on the continental stage.

And Mourinho, speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, has noted that Sanchez moved to Old Trafford in order to assert himself in the Champions League.

United’s group stage campaign was one of efficiency and durability, but you couldn’t help but feel – especially away to Benfica and FC Basel – that they lacked the attacking ruthlessness needed to make an impact on the grandest of European stages, to challenge the cold-blooded attacking nous of teams like Real Madrid.

And Mourinho would have brought in Sanchez with an eye towards rectifying that issue in the knockout phases. The meeting with Sevilla promises to be a frenzied affair and United will need to hold firm in the face of the home side’s ebullience.

If United do that they can start to look in the other direction – namely at Sanchez, whose cutthroat attacking approach on the break could give Mourinho’s men the vital away goal they will so desperately crave.
