David de Gea is the full package and the world’s best, claims Rio Ferdinand

David de Gea has been described as the ‘full package’ in terms of goalkeeping by Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand.

The Spaniard was in sublime form in his home country as Man United held Sevilla to a 0-0 draw away from home in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg.

Jose Mourinho’s side return to Old Trafford with a cleansheet going into the second leg, mainly down to De Gea’s fantastic performance.

He denied a collection of Sevilla players on a number of occasions, including one breathtaking stop near the end of the first half.

“I think all round he is the full package,” Ferdinand claimed on BT Sport after the stalemate in Seville.

A Champions League winner with United in 2008, Ferdinand suggested that De Gea provides a wider range of attributes than his competitors for the world’s best goalkeeper title.

Manuel Neuer of Bayern Munich is the man most often compared to De Gea, but most now agree that the United shotstopper is the world’s best.

“In terms of the all-round packages, I think if you looked at all the others’ games, I don’t they’re as strong all-round as he is,” Ferdinand said.

“Buffon, ageing. Neuer, there’s been big moments in big games where he’s conceded a lot of goals, I don’t think he’s as complete as De Gea is today.”

“Outright the best goalkeeper in the world. The great keepers don’t have to make saves every 10 minutes. He has that concentration in abundance. The reflexes, the speed is phenomenal.”

Paul Scholes suggested that De Gea will be named United’s Player of the Season again this year.

He won the award three consecutive seasons before Ander Herrera stripped him of his title in the last campaign. As the first goalkeeper ever to win it, he looks as if he will do so again.
