Paul Pogba needs love and freedom at Manchester United to flourish, claims Ian Wright

Paul Pogba must be loved and given freedom at Manchester United to have true success, suggests former-Arsenal striker Ian Wright.

The Premier League legend was speaking on Sky Sports when he suggested Pogba is not playing to his best ability and showing the kind of stunning technical ability that has allowed him to tease teams in the past.

Pogba has had some magnificent runs of form this season, but has also had periods of questionable performances, including recently with a woeful display against Tottenham Hotspur in a 2-0 defeat at Wembley and in a 1-0 loss against Newcastle United.

However, all of Man United’s players were poor in those fixtures, as was the case in his last spell of poor form during the festive period as United lost leads to Leicester City and Burnley.

“When I saw him play against Newcastle I thought that’s not the Pogba I know,” Wright told Sky Sports. “The one I know is the one who took the mickey out of England at the Stade de France with unbelievable play that he is capable of doing.”

Telling United boss Jose Mourinho how Pogba can be brought back up to the salivating level of football that he has previously shown, Wright said that “Pogba is somebody that should be able to get the team together and bring the team and drive them through.

“His confidence has taken a bit of a knock. He needs to be loved, playing, and playing with freedom.”

Pogba hasn’t been as awful as some have made out, but hopefully Mourinho will have learnt now where his best position is. There were reports the pair had had a disagreement over that particular discussion. Pogba insists, and is likely correct, that he is best on the left side of a midfield three, where he flourish at Juventus.

United have been treating him as a normal central midfielder or a holding midfielder. He’s a creative force in a similar mould to some of the league’s best like Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne, though with a wider range of attributes, some would suggest.
