Mourinho was delighted to be able to speak about McTominay after perennial questions about Pogba.
“Can I hug you?” he jokingly asked the BT Sport reporter who invited him to speak about McTominay.
“I went to the press conference before and the Qs about Paul,” Mourinho continued.
“I think the questions should be about the kid. I think he was fantastic.
“He did everything well, he put lots of pressure on Banega which was important to stop him, their playmaker.”
Mourinho picked out McTominay’s quality and composure on the ball in particular.
“He was always comfortable, simple, safe in possession,” he claimed. “I think he was brilliant.”
Wednesday night saw McTominay make his 16th appearance for United. Nine of those have now been starts for the Reds.

Mourinho clearly trusts him, and that is only growing, and McTominay is gradually ensuring he’ll be part of the manager’s long-term plans at the club.
