Manchester United can do big things as a team in future, claims midfielder Nemanja Matic

Manchester United still have the ability to go on and achieve big things in English and European football despite signs from rivals Manchester City that they have the potential to dominate the game for the next few years, according to Nemanja Matic.

Pep Guardiola’s Man City have been impressive across town and sit well ahead in the Premier League title race. They could become Champions within the next few weeks.

Man United have had moments of brilliance this season and could easily still beat their cross-city rivals to the title next season. However, Jose Mourinho’s men are in a poor patch currently, with defeats to Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United recently and generally poor performances in the last month.

“I think that we have improved,” midfielder Matic said of United over the course of the season.

”Of course, in the Premier League, it is difficult to win every game, but I think step by step we have improved and in the future, I believe, as a team, we can do big things together.”

Matic joined for £40m last summer from Chelsea in a surprise deal and will face his former club on Sunday at Old Trafford. The Reds will have another big summer of spending this year and should add another midfielder to play alongside Matic and Paul Pogba.

That may be the key in helping Mourinho genuinely challenge Guardiola at City. Matic said the focus isn’t just on next season, though, with United still in the FA Cup, at the quarter-final stages, and the UEFA Champions League, with a Round of 16 second leg against Sevilla to come.

“I’m happy to be with the team and how we are working together. I’m sure we can do something this season and in the future for sure,” he asserted.

“We have to be honest and say we have had some very good games, but we have also had some bad games. We have to improve together. We have the Champions League and the FA Cup still to play for.

“To win the league is going to be very hard as we know because the gap is very big, but we have to fight until the end and we will see what we can do.”
