Pundit Alan Shearer has defended Jose Mourinho‘s tactics for Manchester United’s match vs Sevilla in the Champions League knockout stages.
United travelled to Spain in the hopes of coming away from the first leg with a few away goals to help them get into the next round.
Instead the match ended in a goalless draw much to the frustration of the away fans who expected to see their side dominate.
For most supporters the result wasn’t as frustrating as the performance as the Red Devils laboured to the draw looking lost for creativity or ideas on how to win.
Shearer though believes Mourinho’s tactics would be completely forgotten about should he lead his team to a win in the anticipated second leg.
“So there is no doubt he was going there [to Sevilla] not to concede. And that’s the way they played. It wasn’t pretty, it was pretty dull.
“But if they get the right result at Old Trafford, score two or three goals, into the quarter-finals, then no one will remember that performance away at Sevilla. That is what European football is all about.”
Manchester United’s performances of late have agitated fans with even some sections calling for tactical changes from Jose.
While the displays have been far from great, the Portuguese boss is still implementing the same tactics that saw the team win so many plaudits at the start of the season.
No supporters were concerned then but many have grown infuriated recently as United’s last five matches read as two wins, two losses and a draw.
The loses have proven to be hugely detrimental to the club’s campaign as it leaves them in a delicate situation where they must beat Chelsea and Liverpool in their upcoming matches to simply remain in the Champions League qualification spots.
The Red Devils have been in the second spot for most of the season and to not qualify for Europe’s elite competition would be seen as nothing short of a disaster.
