Gareth Southgate will persuade Scott McTominay to pick England over Scotland

Gareth Southgate will meet Scott McTominay at Carrington in an attempt to persuade the 21-year-old to pledge his allegiance to England rather than Scotland, according to reports.

The young midfielder has attracted worldwide attention following dedicated, confident performances in the middle against Sevilla and Chelsea.

He has never been capped at any level for either country, and remarked last year that, despite growing up in England, he feels Scottish due to his Glaswegian father.

And according to the Times‘ Matt Hughes, the England manager will meet with McTominay to discuss the possibility of playing for the Three Lions instead.

Newly appointed Scotland boss Alex Mcleish held talks with the youngster on Thursday and reportedly told him that he could feature in friendlies against Costa Rica and Hungary later this month.

And Southgate may indeed tempt the youngster in his direction by canvassing the possibility of receiving an England cap at the end of the month, or perhaps even a World Cup spot.

This conversation is happening after just ten starts in the first team for McTominay – a notion which serves as an indictment of the toxic way in which young talent is treated on these shores.

But the decision is an important one nonetheless: the youngster, despite coming from more or less nowhere last season, now finds himself at the crux of Mourinho’s midfield and has developed into a prominent talking point ever since he started ahead of Paul Pogba in Seville.

Going from anonymity to worldwide recognition in the space of a few months is a tough process, and McTominay will need to ensure that any decision he makes is fuelled by how he, and nobody else, feels deep down.
