Fulham left-back and Manchester United target Ryan Sessegnon has noted that he idolised Luke Shaw when he was growing up.
The youngster emerged onto the scene as a mere 16-year-old last season and made 30 appearances during his opening campaign.
And Sessegnon, who reportedly attracted attention from Man United, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur over the summer, has only seen his stock rise this season having claimed 13 goals for the Cottagers – despite mainly playing at left-back.
Speaking in an interview with the Telegraph, Sessegnon revealed how he idolised Shaw and Gareth Bale during his younger years.
“When Shaw was at Southampton he was a left-back and I loved watching him bomb up and down the wing, create goals, score goals, so I think I try to emulate that. Gareth Bale same thing really.”
You might think that Shaw, due to being just 22, is simply too young to be idolised by any young football fan, but this is not the case for Sessegnon, who would have been 12 watching the Englishman bomb down the flank for Southampton whilst Bale singlehandedly save Spurs from relegation.
That alone is a pretty startling notion, but it gets nowhere near what the teenager has managed to achieve in less than two seasons of professional football. His idols tell you all you need to know about his own style: direct, devastatingly quick, fearless going forward, full of strength and purpose on the ball.
Make no mistake: there aren’t many youngsters – if any – with the same scary potential as Sessegnon in this moment in time.
