Martin Keown claims Romelu Lukaku has gotten a huge psychological boost

Martin Keown has claimed that Romelu Lukaku has gotten a huge psychological boost ahead of Manchester United’s clash with Crystal Palace.

The Belgian striker left fans raving about him after his performance in the crucial match vs Chelsea in the Premier League last Sunday.

Lukaku managed to lift his team and help them secure a comeback win by scoring his side’s equaliser as well as setting up the winner.

Jesse Lingard was the player to benefit from the powerful forward’s brilliant piece of play as United ran out 2-1 winners.

Keown believes that the former Everton man’s performance in that match would’ve been a huge psychological boost for him and that it would’ve felt special for him.

According to the Sport Review, Martin said to the Daily Mail: “As a striker, you want to score against everyone, you do not want to end your career with a reputation for failing to score against the best sides.

“It will have felt special for Lukaku to break his duck against Chelsea, where things did not work out for him. That goal will have given him a big psychological lift.”

There have been huge criticisms of Romelu this season from both the neutrals and Red Devils’ fans themselves despite his goalscoring record.

The striker has managed over 20 goals across all competitions but has yet to earn the respect that he deserves, even stating so publicly.

Romelu Lukaku was widely regarded as one of the league’s best finishers but since his move to Manchester United has been widely criticised.

Many have pointed towards his less than silky first touch, his apparent inability to perform in big games and his lack of link-up play as areas that need improvement.

While Lukaku is never likely to have the best first touch, he’s certainly improved tenfold in all the aforementioned departments and proved so against the Blues.

He singlehandedly dragged his team to a result in a way that only complete forwards can truly do and deservedly won the man of the match award.
