Manchester United star Ashley Young has stated that the players are not in awe of fierce rivals and league leaders Manchester City.
The Citizens have been the Premier League’s best for much of the season after Jose Mourinho‘s men fell behind of the title race.
United started the season brightly, going toe to toe with City but inconsistencies crept in and they had to settle for a top 4 fight.
Mourinho’s side have been in second place since but find that even that position is now under threat from the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea.
The recent crucial win over the Blues will have certainly helped matters but the Red Devils will soon face the Reds and Young dismisses any talk of being in awe of any side.
According to Sportskeeda, Ashley said to the Daily Mail: “We aren’t in awe of Man City. They have had a good season, you can’t get around that, but we talk about ourselves.
“I don’t think you’d find a United player talking about City, as you wouldn’t find a City player talking about United. We concentrate on what is happening here.
“Credit to them, they have done fantastically well this season. But we’re fighting on all fronts. Even in the league, until the points are done and they’ve won it, we’ve got a lot to play for.”
The Sky Blues’ progress this season under Pep Guardiola and impressive football has seen them being compared to the best teams in football, past and present.
Jose and Pep will come face to face soon enough once more this campaign but Manchester United will hope to have second place wrapped up by then as it’s the club’s minimum aim now.
The Portuguese coach has acknowledged the gap between the two clubs is too big despite Ashley Young‘s insistence on fighting until the end.
Perhaps it was Jose Mourinho‘s way of attempting to let complacency creep into Manchester City’s side but the points continue to swing in their favour.
Even if the title does become theirs, Manchester United will have an opportunity to prove that they can match their rivals when they go head to head.
