Nemanja Matic has outlined what Manchester United must do to become contenders for the Premier League title, after netting his first goal for the Reds.
The Serbian’s beautiful strike on the half-volley against Crystal Palace grabbed Man United three points, completing a second-half comeback after Jose Mourinho’s side had been 2-0 down at one point.
United have, too often this season, dropped points away from home at smaller sides, including a humiliating defeat to promoted outfit Huddersfield Town and draws at Stoke City and Leicester City. This could have been the same, but for Matic’s goal.
His side now remain 16 points behind local rivals Manchester City, but regain the second place in the Premier League following Liverpool leapfrogging United at the weekend.
“I think that we are improving,” Monday night’s hero said.
“We need to do more, for sure, because in these small games, we drop some very important points, and as you know, you cannot lose these kind of points.
“If we turn back the game against Leicester away, Huddersfield away… in this kind of games, if we manage to win, we can compete for the title.”
That’s exactly what United did on Monday, and it shows that the possibility of becoming champions next season, because United will not earn that title this season due to the gulf in quality with Man City, is there.
Matic insisted that United have enough quality, but conceded that the United players know they must do more.
“The quality is there, for sure, but we have to be honest, we have to do more,” Matic explained, “because in this league, every team is strong, there are five or six teams that can realistically compete for the title.
“So I hope that next season and for the end of this season we can learn form our mistakes. But we are in a good way.”
