Manchester United target Justin Kluivert reveals what Jose Mourinho really said to him following Europa League final

Manchester United target and Ajax winger Justin Kluivert has revealed that the conversation he had with Jose Mourinho following the Europa League final had nothing to do with transfers.

Reports claimed earlier this year that Mourinho had told the youngster, son of former Netherlands international Patrick, to play another season with Ajax before making a “special transfer” to Old Trafford.

Kluivert has since denied the prospect of leaving Ajax in the summer, while Mourinho made it clear following the arrival of Alexis Sanchez that he wasn’t interested in adding any further attacking reinforcements in the transfer window.

And the 18-year-old, speaking in an interview with Four Four Two, noted that the pair simply exchanged pleasantries on the pitch in Stockholm.

“He said it was nice to see me again after such a long time, because he had known me when I was a baby. And he said it was nice to see that I was doing well,” he said.

We very often tend to see what we wish to see, ignoring the parts that we don’t want to be there. The mind is a fascinating place, and one thing which has always amazed me is its capacity to create its own truths and lead you to believe them.

And the conversation with Mourinho and Kluivert is just another perfect example of that – a kind of footballing mirage, the sight of manager and promising youngster together being enough to promulgate a story with no basis in reality.

That said, while Kluivert will understandably stay put for another year, his name is unlikely to disappear from the headlines altogether over the next few years.
