The former-Red believes that Mourinho is attempting to instil a winning mentality in Shaw.
The young left-back has had a tough few years at Man United since joining in a record-breaking transfer from Southampton under Louis van Gaal. Injuries haven’t help, but there have been complaints about his attitude, too.
“He is looking for a reaction from Luke,” Wilkins explained to Sky Sports News.
“I feel for Luke a little bit because when he was at Southampton he looked an outstanding prospect at left back and it was a good move for him to move to Old Trafford.”
Shaw has had some fantastic spells in United’s side where he’s proved himself, but has either been stopped by injury or managerial decisions.
He’s hardly played this season, and started in the FA Cup quarter-final for United in a comfortable 2-0 win against Brighton & Hove Albion.
It seemed at first to be a lease of life for Shaw, but Mourinho hooked the Englishman at half-time to replace him with 32-year-old Ashley Young, before criticising him publicly post-match.
“But I’ve said on numerous occasions – when you go to Old Trafford,” Wilkins continued, “it’s not only what you can do with the ball, you’ve got to have the mentality of a winner as well and perhaps Jose is not quite seeing that in Luke at this moment in time.”
