BBC: Zlatan Ibrahimovic to leave Manchester United imminently

by Leo Nieboer

Zlatan Ibrahimovic will leave Manchester United “imminently” having failed to fully recover from a cruciate ligament injury, the BBC has confirmed.

The Swede plundered 29 goals in his opening campaign at Old Trafford, only to see his season cut short by a serious knee injury sustained against Anderlecht in the Europa League.

He signed a new deal with the club over the summer and made a miraculous early return from injury in November, but has not featured for Man United since Boxing Day due to continued complications with his knee.

And the BBC’s Simon Stone has confirmed that the 36-year-old will be released from his contract imminently following a frustrating spell on the sidelines.

Ibrahimovic has been closely linked with MLS side LA Galaxy but it is yet to be confirmed where his next destination will be – assuming he wants to keep playing.

This is not how it was supposed to end. Zlatan proved everyone wrong when he arrived in England last year with a remarkable stream of goals, helping to restore a sense of verve to a United team lacking in confidence following the Louis van Gaal era, and there are no doubts would have continued to do so had fate not decided to intervene.

Mourinho noted recently that Zlatan, although not injured, still does not feel completely right in his body. And you can only hope that, for the sake of football in general, he can make a return to the pitch over the next couple of months. A man of his stature and list of achievements does not deserve to have injury decide when his career ends, that’s for sure.
