Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to offload Toby Alderweireld in the summer to avoid seeing him leave for £25m next year, according to reports from Belgium.
Alderweireld has also emerged on the club’s radar after reaching an impasse with Spurs over terms on a new deal under Mauricio Pochettino.
And according to Belgian media outlet HLN, the North London side will let Alderweireld leave this summer to prevent clubs from triggering a £25m release clause on his contract which can be triggered next year.
The arrival of Davinson Sanchez, who has been excellent this season, has somewhat taken the weight of expectation off the Belgian’s shoulders having played a fundamental role the two previous impressive Premier League campaigns under Pochettino.
But make no mistake: Alderweireld remains one of Spurs’ best players and bringing his steady, patrolling influence at the back to Man United’s set-up would lay the foundations for a concrete – and consistent – defensive back line.
And supporters will hope that Aldeweireld, along with the Ivorian, can form a genuine partnership together next term.
