Antoine Griezmann has insisted that Paul Pogba is happy despite his latest struggles at Manchester United.
The French duo met up this week ahead of a set of international friendlies which will act as a warm-up for this summer’s FIFA 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Griezmann, who himself was in a poor period of form earlier this season and drew great criticism from fans and pundits, said that Pogba is still enjoying himself.
“He came back [to the squad] with a huge smile on his face,” Griezmann told media as France prepared to face Colombia on Friday night.
“He was happy. It’s not easy when you don’t play at your club or you don’t feel at your best. It happened to me and he knows that.
“He still enjoys having fun and working hard, which are what matter the most.”
Griezmann did urge Pogba to prove himself to Man United fans as well as manager Jose Mourinho, but said that the France squad and coaching staff would act as a support throughout the rough patch.
“It’s up to him to prove and show that he’s still the player that he can be,” Griezmann continued. “The coach trusts him, like the entire squad. We need a smiling Paul and an efficient one on the pitch.”
The Atletico Madrid player knows Pogba well, and came close to joining United himself. But it’s now been two months since the midfielder scored or assisted for United, a spell lasting nine matches since a comfortable 3-0 win against Stoke City.
Things need to improve quickly for Pogba, who is supported by most United fans even at this point, having seen his breathtaking quality at other points throughout the season.
