England manager Gareth Southgate couldn’t hide his delight for Manchester United star Jesse Lingard after the nation beat Holland 1-0.
In the first of the Three Lions’ two friendlies, the academy product rose for his country and put in a match winning performance as he grabbed his first senior international goal.
Southgate previously worked with Lingard when he was the U21s manager for England and has maintained his faith in the player in the senior side as well.
The Englishman was also clearly encouraged by first goal for his country and he couldn’t have scored it at a better time as they warm up for the World Cup in Russia.
Jesse’s form for United this season should see him on the plane with the rest of the squad but with other attacking talent on Gareth’s hands, he will certainly have to finish the campaign strong.
Jesse Lingard has definitely done far better this season than most Red Devils’ fans expected of him and has continued to go from strength to strength.
Supporters often pointed to his finishing as an attribute that needed work on and it’s clear to see he’s improved in that regard.
With his goalscoring record at double digits this season, it’s difficult to ask for more from Lingard as he worked his way up from being a decent rotational option to a starter for Manchester United.
He may have split fans at the start of the campaign but there’s nothing more that supporters love to see than one of their own performing well consistently for the first team.
