Antoine Griezmann has admitted he would love to play alongside Paul Pogba at Manchester United.
The Frenchman, though, was quick to deny that his dream of playing with his friend and national squad teammate Pogba all year round does not mean a move to Man United is on the card.
Griezmann came tantalisingly close to signing for United in last summer’s transfer window, with most expecting the move to be completed before June. But FIFA upholding Atletico Madrid’s transfer ban saw the forward decide to stay in the Spanish capital.
“It would be nice to play alongside you all year long,” Griezmann said, speaking to Pogba on Canal+ during the international break.
“But, to be clear, that does not mean I am going to go Manchester United.”
The Atleti man teased United fans last year, claiming at one point that there was a 60% chance of him signing for the Reds.
Griezmann has never hidden his love for the club, or more specifically of David Beckham and the famous number 7 shirt at United, which is currently vacant.
“I wear long sleeves when I play because of Beckham, he did as well and he is my idol,” Griezmann said. “No one had the right foot he had. I’ve never spoken to him but I would like to.”
Despite his desire to play with Pogba, to emulate Beckham, it does now seem unlikely Griezmann will ever be a United player.
Jose Mourinho brought in Romelu Lukaku last summer and the Belgian has done fantastically so far. The manager wants pure wingers who can get crosses into the box, and Griezmann doesn’t quite fit that category.
