Manchester United target Samuel Umtiti has refused to rule out the prospect of leaving Barcelona in the summer amid continued contract disputes with the Catalan side.
The Frenchman’s current contract expires in 2021 but contains a release clause of just £54m, yet talks over striking a new deal have stalled.
Umtiti reportedly wants a notably improved salary following his exploits at the Nou Camp this season but Barcelona, having splashed out big on Philipe Coutinho alongside handing Lionel Messi a new deal, are reluctant to satisfy his demands – and wouldn’t even be able to give him a new contract until the first day of the next financial year due to FFP stipulations.
The 24-year-old took part in a questionnaire game alongside Olivier Giroud on Telefoot and was asked about leaving Barcelona and joining Man United.
He had the option to answer yes, no or joker to each question. Needless to say, he opted for the latter when it came to any talk about his future.
It is no overstatement to claim that Umtiti has been Barcelona’s best player this season aside from Messi and you sense that club chiefs will eventually play ball and give him what he wants.
That said, Jose Mourinho would be wise to capitalise on any further delay in getting a deal over the line by offering Umtiti a lucrative package.
