Paul Pogba has been videoed in good spirits and performing some skills on the ball during a training session with France.
The Frenchman has endured a difficult time of late under Jose Mourinho, with Scott McTominay‘s rise to the first team, injury issues, poor form and illness reducing him to just four starts in 11 games.
He was subsequently left out of the starting XI for France’s 2-3 friendly defeat to Colombia last Friday, coming on with only 20 minutes left.
But Pogba has nevertheless been in characteristically good spirits ahead of France’s trip to Moscow for a friendly with Russia on Tuesday.
This is the type of video that will see some sections of the footballing world – and indeed the United fan base – hitting out at Pogba for not posting a video of himself going through some shuttle runs or something instead. “Put some bloody elbow grease into it for once!” Graeme Souness shouts into his phone.
There is plenty of criticism coming Pogba’s way at this moment in time. The 2-1 win over Chelsea was the last time supporters saw the midfield in full flow, bringing the ball up the pitch with eloquence and purpose. His failure to impose himself since has occurred concomitantly with a kind of meltdown from Mourinho and supporters.
But as we have seen, Pogba’s style – his capacity to open up a game and make you smile – has the power to alter the mood of United fans as a whole with just one good performance and result. He needs to do exactly that as Mourinho’s men look to set the tone for the closing stages of their season against Swansea City.
