Manchester United’s David de Gea is the latest of footballing stars to claim that facing Barcelona’s Lionel Messi is a special thing.
The Argentine has been hailed by many to be the world’s best player though the debate continues on Cristiano Ronaldo’s own talents.
De Gea hasn’t faced Messi too often on club level with United not facing the Spanish side for a couple of years now but the two faced off on the international stage with their respective nations.
The former Atletico Madrid man has been on the end of his own type of debate with fans arguing whether he’s the world’s best goalkeeper or not.
Putting the debate aside, there’s no doubting that these two players are certainly among the best in the world and are a joy to watch.
According to the Daily Star, David said: “As a goalkeeper it is a challenge to face Messi. But we want the best players to be on the pitch and Messi is one of them. It’s always special to play against him.”
The Red Devils goalkeeper could’ve potentially faced Lionel at least twice per season should his move to Real Madrid have happened.
David de Gea was touted to join the La Liga side multiple times over the past few seasons and despite his recent suggestions of remaining in England, rumours continue to swirl.
Manchester United have done incredibly well to hold onto the Spaniard for so long and it’s a credit to Jose Mourinho as well how he seems to have convinced his player to remain at Old Trafford.
If the Portuguese manager wants to have any hopes of bringing the club back to the top of the footballing world then he’ll certainly need De Gea to do so.
