Manchester United have established contact with Napoli left-back Faouzi Ghoulam’s representatives ahead of a £26m in the coming weeks, according to reports from France.
Jose Mourinho will be in the market for reinforcements in that position over the transfer window to compliment Ashley Young, who turns 33 in the summer.
Ghoulam enjoyed a sensational start to the 2017/18 campaign before suffering a broken kneecap back in November. He will return to training this week.
And according to French media outlet RMC Sport, United have made contact with Ghoulam’s representatives and will launch a starting bid of £26m to secure his services.
Napoli have reportedly lined up the signing of Benfica’s Alex Grimaldo for the summer, rendering the Algerian international less indispensable under Mauricio Sarri, and United would be wise to put Ghoulam on the top of their list ahead of the summer.
Despite his long injury layoff, the left-back ticks all the boxes: currently in the prime years of his career at 27, naturally gifted on the ball, quick across the ground, defensively astute but very much attack-minded.
United have often lacked the necessary thrust from Young on the left hand side to open up space for the likes of Anthony Martial, Alexis Sanchez and Marcus Rashford this season. Signing Ghoulam would be a considerable step towards addressing that shortcoming in their attacking dynamic.
