Manchester United are keeping an eye on Swansea star Alfie Mawson: report

Manchester United are reportedly keeping an eye on Swansea star Alfie Mawson as they continue their search for defenders.

The Englishman has seen his stock rise in recent times with his performances even catching the eye of England manager Gareth Southgate.

Mawson was even called up for the recent international break but wasn’t given a senior cap against either Italy or the Netherlands.

The centre-back could prove to be a budget signing in comparison to United’s other defensive targets such as Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti.

Jose Mourinho certainly appears to be keeping his options open and hasn’t been afraid before to raid fellow Premier League teams for talent.

According to talkSPORT, the Sun report that the Red Devils sent scouts to watch Alfie as they keep tabs on the defender with there being plans to revamp the club’s defence.

Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof represent Mourinho’s current options in the centre of defence.

However, the Portuguese manager is said to wish to improve the depth of his squad and will likely get rid of one or two of the aforementioned players.

Despite Smalling’s heroics in the Manchester derby, he’s rumoured to be the most disposable of the group with Jones hardly hanging on either.

Rojo was just given a new contract while Bailly and Lindelof were both brought in by Jose himself over the past two seasons.

Should both Englishman leave the club, the former Real Madrid manager would be replacing like for like in terms of nationality if Alfie Mawson joins.
