Danny Higginbotham: Paul Pogba is frustrating and can be replaced at Manchester United

by Marwan Harraz

Danny Higginbotham has claimed that Paul Pogba can be replaced at Manchester United following recent reports surfacing that Jose Mourinho wishes to cash in on the player.

The Frenchman has been deemed by many to be irreplaceable given his status as one of the best midfielders in the world.

Pogba at United though has failed to put in the kind of performances consistently to see him live up to that status in a way he did at Juventus.

Higginbotham believes the inconsistency makes the playmaker frustrating, especially as people know what he’s truly capable of.

Mourinho also called on Paul to be more consistent following his match winning performance against Manchester City that saw him grab a brace.

According to talkSPORT, Danny said: “Pogba is frustrating, because we saw what he is capable of against Manchester City. Teams look to frustrate Manchester United.

“Teams sit back against them and then players like Pogba are forced to come looking for the ball. Pogba is a player who wants to get on the ball and make things happen.

“But I want to see him higher up the pitch. I don’t want to see him going towards the ball because I think his influence going forward is absolutely brilliant and we saw that against City with both the goals he scored.

“I think he gets frustrated at times because the build-up play from United is methodical, but only because teams are sitting back. Your top players then want to get involved so they go and drop deeper to make things happen.

“But Pogba is player you want in the final third, higher up the pitch, creating goals and scoring goals. He is an incredible talent and when you sign a player of that calibre and for that money, you have to play him in his best position.

“You can’t play him sitting in front of the defence. But Pogba needs to be more consistent. You know he’s got the ability, he is a world-class midfielder, but he just needs to get that consistency in his game.

“Could he be replaced if he leaves Manchester United? I hope Pogba doesn’t leave, I think he’s a fantastic player, but could he be replaced? Arguably, yes.”

It’s tough to think about who could replace Paul Pogba at Manchester United should the reports of his potential departure turn out to be true.

There’s also the prospect of having to deal with the likelihood that the former Juventus man would do better elsewhere.

There’s a very low chance that should Pogba decide to move on he would fail to perform for his new club which would only rub salt in United and their fans’ wounds.

Either way, supporters will be hoping there’s no truth to the reports and that the academy product is here to stay but will also add the consistency to his game they so desperately want to see.
