Jose Mourinho was pleased with the simplicity of his Manchester United side’s football against AFC Bournemouth.
The Portuguese was hugely critical of his players after a 1-0 defeat to relegation favourites West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford at the weekend, describing them as “masters of complication.”
After a comfortable 2-0 win against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, Mourinho hailed the professionalism of Man United.
“The players were good,” Mourinho told BT Sport after the final whistle on the south coast.
“I think it was a good team performance; professional, controlled, good effort, good responsibility.
“[There was a] desire to play, to have the ball, to score, and also desire to cope with the defensive responsibilities against a fast team, a team which is not easy to play against.”
Mourinho told reporters pre-match that his team selection, which saw seven changes from the weekend, was a mixture of punishment for poor performances and rest for key figures ahead of Saturday evening’s FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley.
For those who come into the side, Mourinho was pleased.
“Good individual performances, all of them,” Mourinho adjudged, musing again that his players were “professional, responsible.”
Mourinho was most pleased with the simplicity of his side’s football.
“Everything was different, everything was faster, everything was simple,” he continued.
“The players running without the ball to be in the right positions defensively and attacking. Not running with the ball and trying to always have one more touch, one more flick.
“Everything was good, and I’m happy the result was also good because the players can now have that positive feeling.”
A win was vital for United, to rid themselves of the negative connotations of a loss to a poor West Brom side who had won just three games prior to Sunday’s fixture.
That was so important because of Saturday’s Cup semi-final, which is United’s last chance at a trophy this season after being knocked out of the Champions League and losing the Premier League title to Man City.
