Marcus Rashford is set to remain in Jose Mourinho‘s starting line-up for Saturday’s FA Cup Semi-Final against Tottenham Hotspur, at the expense of January signing Alexis Sanchez, after his brilliant performance in Manchester United’s 2-0 win at AFC Bournemouth on Wednesday night, according to reports.
Rashford was a Man of the Match candidate amongst fans after full-time at the Vitality Stadium, as goals either side of half-time from Chris Smalling and Romelu Lukaku got United back on track in the Premier League following humiliation against relegation-bound West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Mourinho made seven changes to give players a chance to stake a claim to start on the pitch at Wembley Stadium and the 20-year-old, along with midfielder Ander Herrera and fellow forward Anthony Martial, were highlighted as players deserving spots in the XI.
The Sun‘s Neil Custis reported on Friday morning that Rashford has been chosen over Martial to join Jesse Lingard and Romelu Lukaku in the front line – a decision which will not please the unsettled Frenchman as much as former Arsenal forward Alexis.
Despite earning a staggering £505,000-per-week, the United have not seen the best of the Chile international and his measly return of two Premier League goals since arriving in the January transfer window, on top of his dire showing at the weekend, looks to be the main catalyst of Mourinho’s big decision.
If Alexis was to start as a substitute for a second straight match in North London on Saturday evening, it could act as the reality check he needs to kick on and end the 2017-18 season in fine fashion. He offers great strength from the bench in a contest during which one slice of quality could decide things.
