Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown believes Paul Pogba will take centre stage during Manchester United’s FA Cup semi-final clash against Tottenham Hotspur this Saturday.
The Frenchman confounded his critics a couple of weeks ago with a game-changing display in the second half against Manchester City to spoil their title party.
He was woeful against West Bromwich Albion, but recovered brilliantly to spearhead a win over AFC Bournemouth three days later.
And Keown, writing in his column for the Mail, was adamant that Pogba would once again steal the limelight at Wembley.
“I think you do play him on the big stage,” he said. “He is a showman and showmen do things in these games that you can only dream of.”
“Players like Pogba see FA Cup semi-finals as their moment and that is when they can serve up a moment of magic.
“There has been a debate over whether Alexis Sanchez should play. Wembley is almost a second home for Sanchez. He has won the FA Cup twice there, scored in his two semi-final appearances and found the net twice against “England at Wembley in 2013.
“How can you leave out a player so suited to playing at this ground?”
On two occasions over the past month Pogba has been challenged – nay, required – to step up and perform. He had been awful at the first half against Man City and turned it around in emphatic fashion; he was challenged to perform against Bournemouth by his manager and duly did just that, dominating the middle and claiming a superb assist.
And now he returns to the stadium where his period of ‘war’ with Mourinho began in earnest, with the 25-year-old hooked off for the first time other than injury reasons as United were soundly beaten. Supporters will be hoping that Pogba once again enters that special groove of his in what is the biggest game of United’s season.
