The Englishman has been a crucial part of the club’s history for the last decade but is set to retire at the end of the current season.
Carrick will certainly be a huge loss to United and the club were classy in their recognition of his service as it’s all well deserved.
The veteran midfielder will thankfully remain a part of the club however as Mourinho has offered him a place amongst his backroom staff.
His experience will hopefully continue to serve the Red Devils but there’s hope Old Trafford will see him play a few times before then.
According to the club’s official website, Jose said: “I have to admit that one of the most difficult things in my 18 years as a manager is, when a big player is leaving, it is always very sad.
“So this time we try to do it in a way where I am not sad. A big player is leaving but a big man is staying.
“There is a space for him and we will welcome him with open arms but, before that, we still want Michael to play and then the next day give his boots to his kids.”
Mourinho has already made it clear that he will need to replace Michael in the summer transfer window but he may not have to dip into the transfer budget for it.
On loan Manchester United player Andreas Pereira could be an option to consider though he’s not a natural defensive midfielder.
Known for his playmaking ability however, the youngster could prove a useful back up to Nemanja Matic who’s the clear first choice for the position.
