Marouane Fellaini: Manchester United know they were wrong

by Marwan Harraz

Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini insists the club know they were wrong for not dealing with his contract issues previously.

The Belgian’s contract is set to expire this summer and it’s understood he has plenty of offers coming from multiple clubs from Turkey and China.

Fellaini has often been United’s scapegoat but is highly rated by Jose Mourinho and a contract extension was expected a while ago.

However, nothing was sorted out with the Portuguese manager growing consistently frustrated with the hierarchy’s failure to sort the problem out.

Whether the former Everton man is asking for too much or not is besides the point as whoever is in charge of contracts shouldn’t have let the situation develop as it has since Mourinho made his intentions clear from the start.

According to the Mirror, Marouane said to Sport Voetbal Magazine: “The entire staff is doing everything I can to stay. The club did not renew my contract last year.

“Now I am in a strong position, especially since Mourinho has stated that he wants to keep me. Last year I went to the coach and I said that I wanted a new contract. I then had a second meeting, but I will not ask it 10 times.

“Afterwards I became important for the team… and a good player costs at least 50 million euros. The club knows that they went wrong there.”

It’s certainly not pleasant to see Marouane Fellaini hold the club hostage but there’s no surprise he is willing to take advantage of being in a good position.

The tenacious midfielder is correct in his assessment that Manchester United would probably have to spend plenty more to replace him but there’s hope the situation could get resolved soon.

Fellaini’s made his desire to stay clear but it appears all he asks is to be valued accordingly, otherwise he’ll be on his way out of Old Trafford.
