Chelsea manager Antonio Conte refused to deny interest in signing Manchester United forward Anthony Martial this summer when asked during his pre-match press conference on Saturday.
The main topic of questioning was regarding Chelsea’s anticipated clash against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon, but Conte made sure he was respectful when chat of Martial’s potential Old Trafford exit arose.
Talk of Martial leaving United heightened after his lacklustre showing in Friday night’s 1-0 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium, and Premier League rivals like Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have been said to be keen suitors along with European giants Bayern Munich and Juventus.
When asked whether he would like to sign Anthony Martial in the summer transfer window, Conte responded: “I think this is not the right moment to speak about this. I don’t like to talk about players of other teams. It’s disrespectful for the other players, for my players, for the other clubs.
“Our focus is to finish this season in the best possible way.”
Jose Mourinho is believed to prefer January signing Alexis Sanchez because of his higher work rate and his relentless public criticism of Martial after the most recent defeat could have pushed Martial one step closer to an exit, and it looks like Chelsea might be keeping tabs on developments.
