David de Gea wins first Premier League ‘Golden Glove’ award following West Ham stalemate

David de Gea has claimed his first Premier League ‘Golden Glove’ award for Manchester United following Thursday night’s stalemate with West Ham United.

Manchester City’s Ederson was on 16 clean sheets – one behind De Gea – ahead of being sidelined against Huddersfield Town last weekend, giving the Spaniard a chance to secure the award against the Clarets.

And he got there without even a moment’s bother during what was a game played out mainly in third gear, with the highlight being Mark Noble angrily pawing at Paul Pogba‘s face like some cat having a stroke.

It is not a game which will live long in the memory of anyone except De Gea, who has reached 18 clean sheets with a game to spare and will therefore receive the ‘Golden Glove’ award at the fifth time of trying since joining Man United.

The last player to reach De Gea’s tally of 18 clean sheets was Joe Hart in 2012. United’s last winner of the award was Edwin van der Sar all the way back in 2009 with a remarkable 21 clean sheets.

Ederson will likely end the season two clean sheets behind De Gea but anyone who has watched this season on a week-in-week-out basis will tell you that the Spaniard has dwarfed the rest of his competition from day one.
