Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that Ashley Young will be a key member of the squad next season despite reports claiming a left-back is one of his targets for the summer transfer window.
Alex Sandro has been the rumoured main man to be brought in as the club aim to revamp and prepare to challenge for the Premier League title.
Luke Shaw is also currently a part of the squad though there are some doubts over his place next season and whether he’ll even be at Old Trafford.
Apparently though, Mourinho believes Young is a top player and expects him to make plenty of appearances during the next campaign.
The former Aston Villa man will be 33 next season and so some fans are concerned that United are relying on him to be the first choice in the left back spot.
According to the Republik of Mancunia, Jose said: “When I arrived, he was playing a few matches per season. For the last couple of seasons, lots of injuries, lots of doubts, lots of question marks about his future at the highest level.
“In two years, we managed to have him, even with the important injury he had at the end of last season, but we had him for lots of matches, being important, probably going to the World Cup [with Gareth Southgate’s England].
“I think he’s better now than he was two years ago. That’s the way I see things and, next year again, he will be an important member of our squad. If he’s now on 200, I hope, next season, he goes into the 250s.”
The Red Devils were expected to overhaul their defence while adding depth to their midfield in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Jose Mourinho already discussed how he’s pleased with his attacking options and will focus on the other two areas of the field instead.
However, it seems that the Portuguese manager is happy with Ashley’s contribution and won’t be replacing him despite some supporters believing he should.
